International Desertification Photo Contest

On the occasion of UNCCD COP12,  a photography contest is being holding.

The contest is organized in cooperation with the Federation Internationale de l’art Photographique (FIAP), Photographic Arts Federation of Turkey(PAFT), Ankara Photographic Art Society (PAS) and United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification(UNCCD) secretariat.

The objective of the photo contest is to send a strong visual message to the world that combating desertification can bring multiple benefits to our sustainable future.

NAME OF THE CONTEST:
“International Desertification Photo Contest”

SUBJECT OF THE CONTEST:
Fight against land degradation, desertification and drought

PURPOSE OF THE CONTEST:
All of the areas throughout the world under the risk of desertification constitute the large part of the Earth’s surface. These lands are the livelihood and the habitat of a large part of the world’s population. Combating desertification effectively is closely related to ensuring the sustainable use of water resources and biodiversity with their prevention, and climate change and global warming.
Desertification, along with climate change and the loss of biodiversity were identified as the greatest challenges to sustainable development during the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. Established in 1994, United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is the sole legally binding international agreement linking environment, development and the promotion of healthy soils. The Convention’s 195 Parties work to alleviate poverty in the drylands, maintain and restore the land’s productivity, and mitigate the effects of drought. The 12th Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification will be held in Turkey from the 12th to 23  October 2015. On this occasion, Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs, General Directorate of Combating Desertification and Erosion is holding a photography contest. The contest is organized in cooperation with the Federation Internationale de l’art Photographique (FIAP), Photographic Arts Federation of Turkey(PAFT), Ankara Photographic Art Society (PAS) and United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification(UNCCD) secretariat.
The objective of the photo contest is to send a strong visual message to the world that combating desertification can bring multiple benefits to our sustainable future.

CONTEST SECTIONS:
The contest will be held in one “Free” category.

CONTEST RULES:
• Participation to the contest is free of charge.
• The contest is open to any photographer, amateur or professional, of any country except the contest organization committee, jury members and PAFT representatives.
• Each photographer may submit up to 4 (four) digital (numeric) colored photo.
• Except basic adjustments (brightness, contrast, color), photos structure must be unchanged. Infraction procedure will be executed for the photos of which any of the existing objects are erased or there is addition of any object which doesn’t exist in the original picture.
• Participants, must confirm, declare and undertake that s/he is the rightful owner of the photo uploaded on the photo contest web page and that s/he obtained all necessary permissions and third party releases. On the contrary will be considered as an infraction.
• All kind of intervention and changes on the photo posted for the contest, intended to mislead the committee and to show the photo as if it belonged to him/herself, will be considered as an infraction of rules.
• With the sole act of submitting his/her images or files to a salon under FIAP Patronage, the entrant accepts without exception and with no objection that the submitted images can be investigated by FIAP to establish if these obey to FIAP regulations and definitions even if the entrant is not a member of FIAP; that FIAP will use any means at its disposal for this undertaking; that any refusal to cooperate with FIAP or any refusal to submit the original files as captured by the camera, or failure to provide sufficient evidence, will be sanctioned by FIAP and that in case of sanctions following the non compliance with FIAP regulations, the name of the entrant will be released in any form useful to inform the breaches of the rules. It is recommended to leave the EXIF data in the submitted files intact in order to ease eventual investigations.
• Submitted photos shall not be submitted in the past UNCDD photo contests.
• The award, degree and all kind of gains of the participant identified as infracted the rules, will be taken back. The place of the cancelled award will be left blank. FIAP will be informed of the situation.
• The participation of persons who have breach the rules in accordance with the PAFT Competition Policies, to PAFT approved competitions, will be restricted for 1 (one) year. In case of second infraction of the persons who have received a penalty before, according to TSFS Competition Policies, their participation to PAFT approved competitions will be restricted indefinitely.
• Participants existing in the FIAP restriction list or those whom restriction decision is continuing according to the justifications described above, cannot join this contest.
• The Organizing Committee may request from the entrant, to submit the original file of the photo which have win the award or the exhibition.
• The result of the contest will be announced in the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs website, www.ormansu.gov.tr/ , The General Directorate of Combating Desertification and Erosion (GDCDE) website http://www.cem.gov.tr, on the PAFT’s website http://www.tfsf.org.tr, http://tfsfonayliyarismalar.org and on UNCDD’s website http://www.unccd.int.

NAMING AND SENDING OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS:
• As the contest will be realized with an online uploading system, other alternate shipment (e-mail, cargo, hand-delivered etc.) will not be accepted.
• The contest’s pictures and membership online entries could be done only on the websites below with following the necessary instructions.

• You must first be a member before uploading pictures in the corresponding page. Your membership will be finalized after clicking the activation link sent to your e-mail address.
• Members before could use their old user name and password.
• Sizing and naming operations of the photos to be uploaded for the participation must be done before and the files must be ready and uploaded in one session.

• Photos to be uploaded must be without passé partout and borderless. There should be no information such as the name, signature, logo, dates of entrants on the photo.
• The images to be submitted for the contest must be jpg/jpeg format, saved under 8-12 compression quality and should not exceed 4 MB and not be less than 2 MB in size.
• Name of each image file must be maximum 31 characters. Don’t use letters as Ç, Ğ, İ, Ö, Ş, Ü, ç, ı, ğ, ö, ş, ü. English letters and underscore ( _ ) can be used.
• All letters except the country code and letters for the section definition must be lowercase letters.

Naming:
1. step: Write the country code in the first two characters of the file (“TR” for Turkey). Please refer to the country codes on:

2. step: The name of the author should be up to 5 characters (for example for Ömer Eril YILMAZ write omery or oeril or erily)
3. step: Next character should be the first initial of the section (Digital> D)
4. step: The number of the photo’s range should be written in figures (from 1 to 4) and then an underscore ( _ ) should be added.
5. step: The photo’s name should be written after the underscore, with not exceeding the total character number. For example Ömer Eril Yılmaz 1st photo called “Lake in Way of Desertification” must be written like “TRomeryD1_collesen_gol.jpg” or for his 2nd photo called “Steppe” to write “TRomeryD2_bozkir.jpg”…
• In case of problems occurred during the membership or submission to the contest arising from the system or from the user, the problem will be fixed as soon as possible by giving information to the contact address onlineyarismalar@tfsf.org.tr and the user will be informed. This e-mail address may be used only for uploading a picture related problem; sending photos to this e-mail address doesn’t mean joining the contest and the participation is absolutely not acceptable.
• The Regulatory Authority won’t be responsible of possible problems that may be caused by uploading pictures.
• Whatever is the name under which is uploaded the sent photos, they will have automatically a code number and will enter into jury evaluating system with those numbers. The Jury can’t see in any way the name of the image or the participant.
● All entrants can use their scores and won exhibitions in their position applications in related institutions because such scores were approved by International Organizations.

PUBLISHING AND COPYRIGHT (USE):
• Award and exhibition winning photos will be kept in General Directorate of Combating Desertification and Erosion in the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs archive. These photos will possess use right in accordance to purposes related to activity and / or contest with reserve to indicate their owners and other fee won’t be paid. The Ministry and the UNCCD secretariat, without need for attribution, prior permission or additional pay or consideration: the right to use the submitted images royalty‐free, world‐wide and in perpetuity; the non‐exclusive license to copy, display, distribute, reproduce, and create derivative works of the submitted images, in whole or in part, in any media now existing or subsequently developed, for all Ministry’s and UNCCD’s non‐profit public information purposes.
• The totality of sent photos should be taken by entrants. All jurisdictional responsibility derivate by copyright violations susceptible to emerge in case of partial or entire use of third-parties images belongs to entrants.
• It is considerate that people seen on the photos sent to the contest agreed to the picture to be taken, sent to contest and published in internet and press. All disagreement responsibility derivate from such use belongs to entrant.
• The award winning photos will be published in the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs website, www.ormansu.gov.tr/ , The General Directorate of Combating Desertification and Erosion website http://www.cem.gov.tr, on the PAFT’s website http://www.tfsf.org.tr, http://tfsfonayliyarismalar.org and on UNCDD’s website http://www.unccd.int. and will be also published in 2015 Almanac, in the reserved pages to our agency, a PAFT publication.
• All contest conditions will be considerate as agreed by all entrants.

ALBUM:
After the contest, an album constituted of photos worthwhile to be exhibited and prized, will be elaborated; an exemplary will be sent to all entrants, Jury members, PAFT, Balıkesir M. Emin Tan Photography Library and to FIAP Centers. A digital catalogue constituted of art works worthwhile to be exhibited and prized will be elaborated and will be ready to be downloaded by entrants in the addresses http://www.cem.gov.tr and http://www.unccd.int by November 2015.
