Sixth Steering Committee of CPMF (12-13 November 2015)

The Collaborative Partnership on Mediterranean Forests (CPMF) has been launched in 2010 on occasion of a meeting (September 28-October 01, 2010, Richmond Hotel, Istanbul)  jointly hosted by General Directorate of Forests (GDF) of Turkey, gtz and Silva Mediterranea.

At that time I was working as the Deputy Director General of General Directorate of Forests. I was mainly responsible for international cooperation, research, education, training, forest management, silviculture and information technologies.

On September 29th the formal agreement of the Partnership was signed in Istanbul by eight institutions (FAO, GTZ, MAAP, AIFM, ONF-I, MMFN, WWF MedPO and Plan Bleu).

The Parties of this Collaborative Partnership intend to jointly strengthen the capacity of member countries of Silva Mediterranea (Committee on Mediterranean Forestry Questions), and of the Silva Mediterranea secretariat in order to accelerate the implementation of Sustainable Forest Management and the protection of forest-based ecosystem services under climate change conditions in the Southern Mediterranean region, namely in MoroccoAlgeriaTunisiaLebanonSyria and Turkey. During this meeting a Steering Committee also was established. The conclusions and recommendations of the Steering Committee shall be presented for consideration to the Enlarged Executive Committee (EEC) of Silva Mediterranea Committee to ensure coherence with the Silva Mediterranea Committee’s programme of work and its relevant working groups.

The first meeting of the Steering Committee took place on April 8th, 2011 in Avignon during the second Mediterranean Forest Week. The second meeting was held November 23, 2011 in Ramatuelle (France). The third one was held in Algiers, the fourth one was organized in Tunisia at 4th of December, 2013, the fifth was held in Morocco, 26-31 January 2015. The Sixth was held in Rabat (Morocco) at 12-13 November, 2015.

The official partner or in other words the beneficiary of the CPMF is the General Directorate of Forests (GFD). GDF is a partner of the two projects related to CPMF namely;

  • Adapting Forest Policy Conditions to Climate Change in the MENA Region- http://www.giz-cpmf.org/
  • Maximize the production of goods and services of Mediterranean forest ecosystems in the context of global changes under this Partnership-Project funded by the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM)- http://www.fao.org/forestry/82782/en/

Recently CPMF has 17 signatory partners including TIKA and UNDP Turkey. http://www.fao.org/forestry/silvamed/66624/en/ I participated to the Sixth Steering Committee of CPMF as the Chair of Silva Mediterranea. From Turkish side TİKA has been represented by Ms. Belgin CAĞDAŞ.

I received this invitation letter for Sixth Steering Committee of CPMF send by FAO-Mr.-Belen-invitation-letter for CPMF Rabat 2015

During my interventions I mainly referred to these following articles: Workshop on National Forest Funds-Morocco-http://www.carfu.org/?p=457 and http://www.gonder.org.tr/?p=2260 about Mediterranean Forestry.
I sincerely believe that this initiative and projects are very successful and I am proud to be part of this.
For the present and future status of CFMP I stressed that CPMF is a part of Silva Mediterranea and should be stay as it is. For the upcoming projects I proposed to prepare on small scale enterprises as I tried to explain at this following link “Supporting Forest Based Technology as Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) and Entrepreneurs”

Before these meetings there was also another meeting for Forest Communicators Network in the Mediterranean and Near East region- http://www.fao.org/forestry/communication-toolkit/86425/en/

During these important meetings I also got the chance to explore  the beauties  of Rabat
